Bloemfontein - A man was seriously injured by an ostrich and another left in a critical condition by a horse in two bizarre animal attacks in the Free State on Tuesday.

In the first, a horse "attacked" a 55-year-old man on a farm near Bethlehem.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said he had been riding the horse while herding cows.

“The man was thrown off the horse and then it proceeded to kick him in the head,” she said.

He was airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital in a critical condition.

Later, a man was seriously injured when an ostrich attacked him while he was replacing a billboard poster near a petrol station in Harrismith.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, Mathe said.
