Pietermaritzburg - Musician Claude Charles has been honoured by Rotary Pietermaritzburg for his selfless contribution to society through his talent.

Charles, a Pietermaritzburg musician known for cheering up elderly citizens in old age facilities across the city with his melodies, was honoured with an award by the local Rotary Club on Friday for his generous commitment to others.

Charles expressed gratitude for the award: “I’m humbled by the honour of receiving this award.

“I did not know that what I am doing is serving the community … My reward for playing music is not monetary but is the fulfilment I get from seeing happy faces of people enjoying my music.”

Charles first performed at the Riverside home and later started extending his musical shows to various homes in Pietermaritzburg.

Although he started playing piano at a tender age, his greatest passion now is the guitar.

He recently worked with Headway, a support organisation for people with head trauma that is based in the Baptist church in Scottsville.

Rotary president Rosetta Stander praised Charles for contributing to the community of Pietermaritzburg and described him as a “selfless man with a giving heart”.

She said he always offers to play his music free of charge at community functions.
