Durban - Two women were injured when a runaway tractor hit them in Assagay, on the outskirts of Durban, on Tuesday, paramedics said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the two farmworkers were walking along Lello Road in Assagay when a tractor that was parked at the side of the road started to run away," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"The [women] did not notice it until the tractor hit them. One woman fell clear of the tractor, but the other one fell and the wheels went over her."

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found one of the women seriously injured, while the other had minor injuries.

They were both taken to hospital in Chatsworth.
