Durban – South African film director and producer Anant Singh says he is excited and honoured to be nominated as a member of the International Olympics Committee (IOC).

The Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom filmmaker told News24 on Friday that he had always admired the body and that he was thrilled to participate in its activities.

Although he was mum on the finer details of how the nomination came about, he said, "What is important is that the Olympics have higher viewership today and young people can now access information online. The challenge today is to make sure that organisations like this one continue to develop in ways that keep the youth involved and interested."

CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang congratulated Singh.

"This nomination acknowledges Anant's skill and expertise in film, media and communications. We have, from time to time, called on Anant for assistance in these specific areas, and found his input and advice invaluable."

Hatang said he was certain that Singh would add value to the IOC, and that the organisation would benefit from his considerable global experience.

On Thursday Sports24 reported that a cheerful white tiger cub was unveiled [on Thursday] as the official mascot for South Korea's 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The mascot has reportedly been named "Soohorang", a combination of the Korean words for protection and tiger.
