Pretoria – South Africa has been re-elected on to the African Union's Peace and Security Council, the Presidency said on Friday.

The AU executive council, which met earlier this week, took the decision.

"We welcome the decision of the AU to re-elect South Africa to the PSC," President Jacob Zuma said.

"We commit ourselves to continue working with the other members of the PSC and the rest of the AU membership in pursuit of peace and stability on our continent."

The PSC is composed of 15 countries, of which five were elected for a three-year term and 10 for two years.

The AU summit will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this weekend.

Zuma is expected to lead a delegation from South Africa.

The summit will be held under the theme "African year of human rights with a particular focus on the rights of women".
