Johannesburg – Members of National Treasury are expected to conduct themselves in a way that does not compromise the economic reputation of the country and jeopardise the welfare of citizens, while a handful of people in government continue to “extract” from the public purse, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Gordhan was speaking at the Open Tender Seminar, held in Midrand on Tuesday, despite the news that he has been summoned to appear in court on 2 November 2016, on a charge of fraud over the Sars spy unit.

Cape Town – The charges and summons issued against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan were a “pretext to have him removed from office”, the SACP said on Tuesday.

It was part of a bid to weaken the National Treasury’s struggle against corruption and corporate capture of government, which Gordhan was leading, the SA Communist Party said in a statement.

Johannesburg - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan should step down while he is fighting the fraud charges against him, United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa said.

The NPA announced on Tuesday that the charges related to a pension paid out to former deputy commissioner at Sars, Ivan Pillay. The matter is due before court on November 2.

Johannesburg - Just because Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and a group of ex-employees at Sars have not been charged for the so-called "rogue unit", does not mean it will not happen soon.

A high profile source close to the matter told News24 that the fact that NPA boss Shaun Abrahams spoke at length about the unit at a briefing on Tuesday, showed the Hawks and the NPA were still looking at these allegations.

Statement from the UDM:

The United Democratic Movement has noted that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been issued with a formal summons to appear in court in relation to the South African Revenue Services “rogue unit”.

While we believe that no-one is above the law, this matter must be handled with the utmost care so that it does not have an adverse effect on the South African economy. We already heard that the rand tanked with 2.93% within minutes of the National Prosecuting Authority’s announcement. The timing of this step, just ahead of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement, is poor.

Minister Gordhan will at last have his day in court and we hope that the Nation will soon hear what is really going on behind the scenes.
