Cape Town - Hundreds of South Africans took to Twitter on Monday to honour late former President Nelson Mandela, with some coming up with great, encouraging and even strange ways to spend 67 minutes on Mandela Day.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Monday tweeted that Mandela’s life has “been an inspiration to the world”.

It then asked people to devote 67 minutes - one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service – to something as a gesture of solidarity with humanity.

South Africans across the country have taken up the request, sharing their Mandela Day plans with the rest of Twitter on Monday.

The Public Protector and Cricket South Africa both appealed to Mandela's ability to inspire change.

"It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now," CSA tweeted quoting Madiba.

The WWF said it would be planting a vegetable garden during their 67 minutes for Mandela Day, while Pick 'n Pay fed over 1 000 people on Friday.

Good Hope DJ Dan Corder made light of a famous Mandela speech, remixing it with popular song "Turn Up" by LMFAO, and UDM leader Bantu Holomisa decided to make a more political statement.
