Johannesburg – SA Airways has cancelled all inbound and outbound flights to and from Washington DC and New York due to a major winter storm, it announced on Friday.

"The latest update received from the US has left us with no choice but to cancel more flights at this short notice as unfavourable weather conditions are set to spread," spokesperson Tlali Tlali said.

The storm, named "Winter Storm Jonas", is expected to bring snow, ice, high winds and coastal flooding.

Two flights from Johannesburg – one headed to Washington via Accra and the second to New York – were cancelled on Friday, said Tlali.

A flight from Johannesburg to Washington and another to New York on Saturday have also been cancelled.

Tlali said passengers could get help with rebooking conditions through SAA's call centre, City Travel Office or travel agents.

The conditions include rebooking on to another SAA flight for a later date at no extra charge and are subject to availability of the same booking class.

No change of cabin or routing will be permitted.

Tickets had to be re-issued on or before January 26 and travel had to commence on or before January 31.
