Johannesburg – Four journalists fired by the SABC are disappointed they cannot go back to work despite a Labour Court judgement ordering the public broadcaster to reinstate them, Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann told News24.

"They are so disappointed. They were so excited to come back to work, especially as an election is coming."

Hermann said the four journalists were desperate to communicate news of the elections to the public.

"They want to tell the public about the news. They are journalists, they want to communicate news and suddenly they are saying you can't despite a court order that says they can come back to work. They are very, very disappointed," he said.

The four - Foeta Krige, Suna Venter, Krivani Pillay and Jacques Steenkamp - were denied entry into SABC's Johannesburg offices when they reported for duty a little after 08:00 on Wednesday morning.

Acting head of news Simon Tebele told them they could not come back because the SABC was appealing the Labour Court judgement.

Solidarity going back to court

The Labour Court ruled on Tuesday that four of the eight SABC journalists that were axed by the broadcaster must be reinstated. It also ruled they were entitled to return to work.

The SABC had been interdicted from proceeding with the disciplinary hearings of the four before they were dismissed.

Solidarity on Wednesday tweeted a copy of a lawyer's letter indicating that the SABC intends to appeal the matter.

Solidarity said it will now go back to the Labour Court on an urgent basis to urge the court to order the SABC to allow its members to go back to work.

"We have already started to prepare our papers which will be submitted later on today," Hermann added.
