Johannesburg - Any SABC journalists wishing to travel internationally for work must have their trips approved by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, it emerged on Tuesday.

A letter, which News24 has in its possession, stated that staff must motivate why the trips must be undertaken, and submit a formal report to the minister within seven days of their return.

"The SABC is now required to submit formal requests for all international trips to the minister for approval effective immediately," the letter stated.

The requests must include the motivation for the trip, its financial implications, the list of officials in the delegation and their roles, as well as the "benefits to be accrued to government and country".

The requests must be submitted through the CFO's office, the letter states.

The SABC has recently been under fire for dismissing seven permanent staff members and one freelancer for speaking out against the broadcaster and its editorial decisions. The seven staff members have since been reinstated.
