Johannesburg  In the latest controversy at the SABC, the public broadcaster's head of television, Verona Duwarkah, has been fired, the City Press newspaper reported on Sunday.

She is to be replaced by Sully Motsweni – an official named in the 2014 public protector’s report, When Governance and Ethics Fail, in connection with allegations she had been irregularly appointed by chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to her previous position as head of monitoring, compliance and operation service.

Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper suggested Duwarkah’s dismissal was a result of her refusal to sign off on contracts with local production houses – that had been negotiated by Motsoeneng – but not gone through due process.

Duwarkah, who had held her position since 2012, confirmed the termination of her contract to the City Press but chose not to comment further.

Meanwhile, SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, told the Sunday newspaper that the broadcaster would not discuss internal matters in the media.

“The SABC will not be deterred in delivering on its mandate,” including by “parties internally as well externally who have an agenda to attempt to destabilise the SABC in its business operations,” he said.
