Johannesburg - DA leader Mmusi Maimane has called the SACP hypocrites for demanding that the board of the SABC be recalled. ‎

"There has been a lot of hypocrisy. I don't buy for one minute what the SACP are saying. If they were serious they ‎should have taken on the alliance because this has been going on for a long time. Several journalists have been saying this," Maimane told journalists.

"They can't be Johnny-come-lately's and say this was not their project. This is an alliance project. To capture the SABC for the purpose of getting better coverage."

Maimane said during its investigation the party found that the ANC was covered six times more than other parties at the SABC.

"The ANC must stop flip-flopping and lying to the people that they want an investigation. They must investigate themselves."

Maimane said the ANC should suspend SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng and an independent inquiry must be brought to the public broadcaster to investigate how much influence the ANC has over Motsoeneng.

"Then ultimately we need to restore the SABC."

On Wednesday SACP second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila held a picket at the SABC's headquarters calling for the resignation of the SABC board.

This comes after the SABC and Motsoeneng came under fire after its reviewed policy to stop airing coverage of violent protests.

Several of its journalists face disciplinary action after speaking out against the controversial policy.
