Durban - The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the eThekwini region on Tuesday voiced its dissatisfaction over the nomination process of candidates for the upcoming local government elections.

The SACP in a statement said its Magwaza Maphalala District [eThekwini] executive committee met at the weekend to discuss the latest political developments in the province.

"We would like to put it on record that we are not happy about the manner in which the nomination process of the candidates for the upcoming local government elections in eThekwini region was handled."

Some of the district's concerns included that the SACP was not represented in ward screening committees.

Violent protests

"Our structures are deliberately sidelined and kept in the dark as to when and where the Branch General Meetings [BGM's] and the screening committee meetings will take place.

"There is also gross violation of the list process guidelines based on a number of disputes that have been launched, which were often mishandled or left unattended. In some wards, people were allowed to attended ward conferences even though they don't appear on the voters roll," it claimed.

The SACP said the list nomination processes had resulted in a number of violent protests due to imposed ward candidates.

"These protests have resulted in the burning of infrastructure like roads, municipal buildings, community halls, schools, sub-fire station, motor vehicles, a truck and loss of human lives."
