Quick action by Safe City and police saw three men arrested for two separate robberies in the city on Wednesday.

Safe City general manager Lucas Holtzhausen said the incidents occurred in Church Street just below Boshoff Street.

He said that it was about 8.30 am on Wednesday when one of the Safe City control room operators spotted five men walking up Church Street from Thomas Street.

The operator followed the men via the Safe City cameras and saw them attacking an elderly male and searching his pockets.

“She immediately informed police and continued following the suspects.”

Holtzhausen said the operator then saw the men walking down Church Street where they stopped outside a bank and robbed another man.

“The five men continued down Church Street and started to run in different directions after noticing the police approaching them.”

The police arrested three men near Royal Butchery, BP Garage and Asmall’s in Church Street.

“The three men have been taken to the Pietermaritzburg Central police station and will be charged for robbery.”
