Durban - The South African Local Government Association (Salga) elected provincial chairpersons during their national executive committee (NEC) sitting in Durban this week.

On Tuesday former Johannesburg mayor and acting chair of Salga Parks Tau said that the stage was set for the organisation's national conference next week.

"This NEC also acknowledges the newly elected chairs of our provincial arms. All our provinces have elected new leadership and we look forward to working with them in this fraternity," he said.

Salga CEO Xolile George said the national conference would have a retrospective focus.

"This conference will look at the strength of local government and how it has evolved over the last 15 years and what areas need to be strengthened as local government plays the role at the centre of implementing the national development plan," he said.

"Moreover, we will assess the implementation of global development goals for the qualitative improvement of lives for citizens," he added.
