Johannesburg – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) called for calm at the Mandela Informal Settlement, in Katlehong, East of Johannesburg following a recent shooting.

Overnight clashes broke out between locals and foreigners after a Pakistani shop owner allegedly shot and killed one person and injured four others.

Following the shooting, angry residents went on a rampage, looting foreign-owned spaza shops on Sunday morning.

Police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu said communities needed to minimise criminal elements.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible acts of criminality that undermine the rule of law and call on our communities to marginalise criminal elements that seek to further their activities under the guise of retaliation attacks on foreign shop owners.”

Mahlangu appealed to the community to allow the law to take its course.

“Justice must be seen to be done to dispel the notion that communities need to take the law into their own hands.”

Police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said a case of murder and two cases of attempted murder had been opened.

Authorities also found an unlicensed firearm at the spaza shop.

By Sunday evening, Kweza said the situation in the area was calm.
