Mbombela - A member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and his wife appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for alleged fraudulent transactions, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

Mthenjwa Petrus Ngoma and his wife Mavis Sonto Ngoma appeared in court on Wednesday, said Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga.

"It is alleged that Ngoma committed fraudulent transactions while he was serving as human resources clerk."

Ngoma would fraudulently bill hours of work on the system for reserve force members without their knowledge and then claim the pay, said Mabanga.

He used his wife's account to save the money he obtained from the fraudulent call-ups, he said.

The alleged call-ups were between 2009 and 2013. The pair were granted bail of R20 000, however, they were unable to raise the money and would remain in custody.

They are expected back in court on December 14.
