Johannesburg – Eight SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) employees were arrested for public violence during a protest over salaries on the N1 on Tuesday afternoon, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said.

The three men and five women were part of a group protesting on the N1 South at the Olifantsfontein on-ramp in Midrand, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

They obstructed traffic and threw stones.

Officers had fired rubber bullets to disperse them.

In the morning, a group of about 100 Sanral employees blocked the northbound part of the highway, causing a severe traffic jam.

By 15:00, the protesters had dispersed. Those arrested would face charges of public violence, the JMPD said.
