Cape Town – A black woman has been appointed to head visible policing in the SAPS for the first time in its history, acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said on Thursday.

Nobesuthu Masiye has been appointed divisional commissioner of visible policing, effective February 1.

Phahlane made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, where police briefed MPs on their festive season operations and new management appointments.

"It is the first time in the history of the service that an African female will be heading the organisation," he said.

Lieutenant General Gary Kruser was appointed deputy national commissioner, and Major General Kotsi Nkomo divisional commissioner of detective services.

Lieutenant General Bethuel Zuma, who had been appointed as a divisional commissioner, would be moved to a provincial post.

Phahlane confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant General Baile Brenda Motswenyane as North West commissioner and Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Elvis Jula as the Western Cape commissioner.

"We need new blood and people with experience, so we welcome them all," said chairperson of Parliament’s police portfolio committee, Francois Beukman.

He said Masiye's and Nkomo's appointments showed a commitment to transformation.
