A man was killed during a lightning storm in Sasolburg on Monday afternoon.

Shortly after 16:00, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found the man in a room on the premises, according to a statement.

"Bystanders explained that they were working outside when it started to rain. They apparently tried to seek cover in the nearby room when one of them was struck by lightning," spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"The man's colleagues pulled him into the room shortly after the incident and called emergency services.

"Paramedics who arrived on the scene found the man with no signs of life. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done for him and he was declared dead on the scene."

Vermaak said lightning was a very real danger in South Africa, "and despite the general public knowing that it is dangerous, we don't really seem to grasp just how dangerous it is".

ER24 advised the public to stay indoors during thunderstorms, with all doors and windows closed.

"A general good rule of thumb is to immediately make your way to safety when you hear the thunder and see the lightning," Vermaak said.
