Schools in PE's northern areas to reopen

2016-02-11 17:20

Johannesburg – Schools in Port Elizabeth's northern areas will reopen after they were closed during violent protests against teacher shortages, the Northern Areas Education Forum said on Thursday.

Parents decided on Wednesday night to reopen the 56 schools and to allow negotiations to continue, the forum said in a statement.

The parents' demands included the appointment of 78 teacher to critical posts, a ratio of one teacher to 30 pupils, and control over each school's budget. They wanted these met by the end of the current term.

The forum said parents would keep up their pressure on the education department and government. They threatened more serious protests if they did not have their demands met.

"The parents are wary that the authorities have reneged on their promises in the past and will not allow it to happen again. The parents made it clear that the four weeks of suffering of their children will not be in vain."

The department could not immediately be reached for comment.
