Johannesburg – An overturned bus on the M1 resulted in injuries to 32 people on Monday evening with heavy delays caused as a result.

According to a statement by EMER-G-MED, the accident, in which a 75-seater overturned and landed on its side, happened on the M1 South at the M2 split in Newtown, Johannesburg.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene just minutes later, finding a scene of utter chaos - with bystanders assisting the injured passengers out of the rolled bus," the statement said.

"The cause of the collision is unclear, but it's believed that the bus, which was travelling to Cape Town, collided with another vehicle causing it to overturn."

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department's specialist accident investigation units are on the scene to conduct a full investigation.

Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the driver of the bus had fled the scene.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area as the accident is resulting in heavy delays.
