Durban - Ten children were injured when a bakkie overturned on the N3 near Umlaas Road on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that medics had rushed to the scene and, when they arrived, found the wreckage of the bakkie lying in the freeway.

"All of the occupants were outside of the vehicle. Ten children aged between 18 months and seven-years-old were found on the scene. All of them sustained minor scrapes and bruises," he said.

He said that four adults had also been injured.

Vermaak added that in another incident on the R550 in Jacksonville, Grassmere, 15 taxi commuters were injured.

"Paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene where they found majority of the people lying outside of the taxi. It is believed that most of them were ejected from the vehicle," he said.

"All of the occupants were treated on the scene and later transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further care," Vermaak added.

On the N1 near Brandfort near Bloemfontein, a woman was killed and six others were injured when a car overturned.

The car had rolled several times before leaving the road.

"It is understood that at least one of the adults and a child was ejected from the vehicle. One adult was found with fatal injuries near the vehicle.

"Two children, believed to be between two and three years old, sustained moderate to serious injuries. One of the children was airlifted to Mediclinic Bloemfontein for further care. An ER24 paramedic joined the flight team and escorted the child to hospital," he said.
