Tzaneen - Mark Scott-Crossley appeared briefly in the
Lenyenye Magistrate's Court on Friday, as locals queued to see the man who
allegedly ran over Silence Mabunda in an apparent racist attack.
"No bail for Scott-Crossley," they shouted.
Scott-Crossley made a brief appearance in court after being
charged with attempted murder for allegedly running over Mabunda, 37, in
December last year. He will appear for a bail application next Friday.
He will remain in custody until then.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on December 21 and he
handed himself to police in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Mabunda, an employee at the Moholoholo Wildlife
Rehabilitation Centre, opened a case against Scott-Crossley after he allegedly
grabbed and smashed Mabunda's cellphone in Hoedspruit, Limpopo.
Mabunda claimed Scott-Crossley attacked him at a shop while
he was buying airtime there in December. Mabunda said as he was walking back to
work shortly afterwards, Scott-Crossley drove his car at him.
In April 2005, the Phalaborwa Circuit Court found
Scott-Crossley and his employee Simon Mathebula guilty of the murder of Nelson
Chisale on January 31, 2004. They attacked him with machetes and threw him into
a lion enclosure at the Mokwalo White Lion project.
He was sentenced to life in prison in September 2005.
Mathebula got 15 years, three of which were suspended.
On September 28, 2007 the Supreme Court of Appeal in
Bloemfontein set aside Scott-Crossley’s murder conviction. It substituted five
years’ imprisonment, on the lesser offence of being an accessory after the
fact, for his life sentence.
He was released on parole in August 2008.
