Bloemfontein – The process of appointing a new vice-chancellor and rector at the University of Free State has started, the institution said on Wednesday.

Council was looking for a suitable candidate to replace Prof Jonathan Jansen, who would step down at the end of August, spokesperson Lacea Loader said.

She would not reveal further information, saying it was an internal process.

If the position was not filled by the end of August, Prof Nicky Morgan, current vice-rector: operations at the UFS, would act as vice-chancellor and rector.

Jansen had accepted an invitation to be a Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University, in the USA, in September.

He announced his decision a few weeks after UFS student protesters called for him to step down. In an interview with News24 in April, Jansen denied rumours he was leaving.

"I am not going anywhere. These speculations about me leaving have gone on forever. I receive e-mails every day asking me if I am leaving,” he said at the time.

On May 16, the UFS announced his departure. He was appointed in July 2009.
