Port Elizabeth – A security guard and a second man have been arrested and charged with illegal hunting after allegedly shooting a bushbuck on the side of the road outside Uitenhage in the early hours of Tuesday morning, using the security firm’s revolvers.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said Uitenhage police members on patrol had noticed a security vehicle parked on the side of the road on the R75 near the Springs Resort, just outside of Uitenhage at around 03:20 on Tuesday.

Swart said when the police stopped to investigate, they found one man standing next to the vehicle while a second man was in the bushes nearby with a bright light.

The police then discovered a bushbuck that had been shot and killed, with a dog standing beside it.

She said the police had immediately arrested the men, aged 23 and 25, for illegal hunting and had confiscated two firearms, both .38 special revolvers, as well as ammunition from the men.

She said they had also confiscated the bushbuck and the security vehicle, a branded Isuzu bakkie.

Swart said the two men are expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on a charge of illegal hunting on Thursday.

Additional charges could be added as investigations continue.

Uitenhage police station commander Brigadier Laurence Soekoe praised the officers for their alertness.
