Two suspects were injured in a shootout with police during an attempted business robbery in the CBD on Wednesday.

The injured suspects were arrested while the third managed to escape.

By late Wednesday Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said the suspects “were caught in the act” by police while committing an armed robbery in a clothing shop in Church Street.

“They held staff at gunpoint and demanded money. When police got there, the suspects started shooting at the police and police returned fire. Two of the suspects were injured. The third suspect got away in a white Audi and police are following in his footsteps.

“We are investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder,” he said.

“Cluster commander General Phumelele Makoba has commended the members of the SAPS for their swift response.

“General Makoba believes that the arrest of the suspects will send a strong message to criminals,” Ngobese added.
