Pretoria - A shopper was shot and injured when he tried to apprehend three criminals who had robbed a Scoin shop at the Brooklyn Mall on Thursday of R1m in gold coins.

“Three suspects entered the mall and went to the coin shop and robbed it,” police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

“They took money and gold coins to the value of R1m.”

One patron tried to apprehend the men after the crime, but he was shot in the upper body. The robbers overpowered him, took his gun and ran away. He was taken to hospital.

Traumatised staff

Andre van den Berg, group executive sales manager of the Scoin shop, said two armed assailants walked into store, told staff that it was a robbery and demanded access to the cabinets where the coins were kept.

“Apart from various precious coins, the assailants also robbed our staff of their cellphones. Upon leaving the store the assailants came into contact with a passing shopper, where an altercation arose and unfortunately the shopper was injured,” he said.

Van den Berg said although staff were not hurt, they were traumatised.

“We are shocked with the news of the robbery and the injury. Our main priority is to make sure that all parties involved are all right. Our thoughts go out to the injured shopper and hope he makes a speedy recovery,” he said.

The robbery occurred shortly after 12:00, as the mall was packed with patrons.

Makhubela appealed to members of the public to come forward with information that could help them arrest the robbers.

The BrooklynMall hash tag was trending on Twitter on Thursday:
