Pietermaritzburg - Container shops in Ixopo have allegedly been bulldozed by the Ubuhlebezwe Municipality after community members had been operating them for over 15 years.

Last Thursday the bulldozers tore down 14 container shops while the owners looked on in shock and disbelief.

An owner who asked not to be named said the bulldozers came in on Thursday and, without any warning or reason, began tearing down the containers on orders given by Ubuhlebezwe Municipality.

“The municipality gave us that land in 2000 to start up the shop containers and we were even paying rent to the municipality every month.”

The owner said they had gone to the high court and received a court order that said the municipality would have to put the containers back by Friday at 4 pm.

He said the containers had not been put back and the owners were waiting to see what would happen today.

Ubuhlebezwe spokesperson G.M. Sineke said on Friday that he was not in the office and could not comment.
