Cape Town - Two traffic officers who survived a shooting in Khayelitsha were still recovering in hospital on Wednesday, the Western Cape transport department said.

"The good news is that both officers are in a stable condition, but still in hospital for observation," spokesperson Byron La Hoe said.

"Yesterday's incident was traumatic for the officers, so we wish them a speedy recovery. We look forward to having them back at work soon, and contributing to making our roads safer."

The two were shot while patrolling in Khayelitsha on Tuesday morning.

Two men in a Toyota Avanza apparently drove up to the uniformed officers' vehicle and opened fire.

One traffic officer was shot in the arm, and the other in the stomach.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said there were no new developments in the case.

Anybody with information that might help the police with the investigation can call 021-812-4581.
