Cape Town - Police are investigating a cash-in-transit robbery that unfolded outside a shopping centre in Muizenberg early on Friday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said the incident happened at Capricorn Square in Capricorn Boulevard.

"Armed suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing a [cash-in-transit] security guard of cash boxes," he said.

"During the incident shots were fired, but fortunately no one has been injured."

Shoppers were briefly locked out of stores as managers took precautions against further crime and security personnel acting in co-ordination with law enforcement agencies temporarily blocked an access road to the centre.

No arrests were made.

In another incident on Thursday, a liquor store in Van Riebeeck Road in Kuils River was targeted.

Four armed suspects robbed the store, getting away with whisky and cash.

Whiskey, money recovered

"Their luck ran out when police were quick to respond," Traut said.

The suspects had fled the scene in a white Toyota Run-X.

"Police... spotted the vehicle fleeing the area, which led to a chase," Traut said.

Officers managed to get the four suspects, aged between 20 and 26 years, to stop the vehicle in the Summerville area.

"The firearm used in the robbery, a 9mm Norinco, and the vehicle which was hijacked in Muizenberg on Saturday were confiscated," Traut said.

"The stolen cash and the whisky were also recovered."

Once charged, the suspects are expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate's Court.
