Durban – An Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife employee was killed by a sick lioness on Monday morning at the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, the organisation said on Tuesday.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said the lioness, believed to be suffering from tuberculosis, attacked the water attendant around 07:30.

According to a report in The Witness, the man was working in the park with colleagues when the incident happened.

"The sick lioness, which was within four metres of the worker, attacked him and by the time his colleagues killed the lioness he was severely injured and he later succumbed to his injuries," Mntambo said.

He said the 45-year-old man had been stationed at the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park for more than 16 years.

"The organisation has arranged for the staff member who was with him to undergo trauma debriefing and the family to receive supportive counselling."

Ezemvelo CEO David Mabunda said: "It is not normal for a lion to attack a human being. This sometimes happens when a lioness is protecting young cubs or is sick and unable to hunt."

According to the park management plan, sick lions or lioness are put down to minimise such incidents.

Mntambo said the name of the dead man would be released once all family members had been notified.
