Pietermaritzburg - Sihle Zikalala is the ANC KwaZulu-Natal's new chairperson.

This was after results were announced in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday morning where the province was holding its elective conference.

Zikalala won the position with 780 from current chairperson Senzo Mchunu who received 675 votes.

A total of 1 459 delegates voted.

KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC's largest province, was divided over its support for Mchunu and Zikalala.

It is understood that if Zikalala won, the ANC was more likely to elect a woman president at its 2017 elective conference.

The rest of the provincial top five voted in on Sunday were:

Deputy chairperson - Willies Mchunu

Secretary - Super Zuma

Deputy Secretary - Mluleki Ndobe

Treasurer -  Nomusa Dube-Ncube
