Firefighters said they had received reports of a fire on the Klapmuts Koppie, which is just a few minutes away from Simonsberg, and responded to the scene.

Meanwhile, more than 2800 hectares of vegetation had been destroyed in the fire which has been raging across Simonsberg over the last three days, said spokesperson for the Fire Protection Association, Dale Nortje.

"The fire is still out of control but there are a number of hotspots we are trying to contain," Nortje said.

So far, only one structure had been lost in the blaze.

"There was one thatch-roof cottage that we lost but there were no injuries or fatalities reported," Nortje said.

More than 100 firefighters, some from neighbouring municipalities, had since been deployed to the area.

There were also five helicopters and 15 fire engines on scene.

Nortje said the hot, dry weather was making it extremely difficult to douse the flames.
