‘So many people loved them, we need two memorial services.’

Nico Rossouw (48) and his sons, Jannie (13) and JP (10), from Steelpoort in Limpopo, died in a horror crash on Sunday evening.

A memorial service will be held at Steelpoort, where the boys went to school, and another in Thabazimbi, where Nico (also known to some as Pieter) grew up.  Jannie and JP attended Laerskool Steelpoort.

Nico and his sons were returning home from visiting relatives in Modimolle when the accident happened.

According to Nico’s sister, Anneli Connear (47), a bakkie apparently failed to stop at a T-Junction, hitting her brother’s Datsun sedan. The car rolled and burst into flames.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) we went to do DNA tests because we’re not able to identify the bodies. Death certificates can be issued only after that,” she says.

Anneli says their family is devastated.

“JP was such a good sportsman and excelled at cricket and rugby. He wanted to become a Springbok rugby player. Jannie was academically inclined and a leader in school. He loved computers,” she says.

Nico was due to start a new job in Middelburg at the end of August and had recently become engaged.

“There was so much to look forward to, so many reasons to live. He loved to fish and he loved his family . . . I will miss him a lot. Now it’s just me left. My mom and dad have also passed away. I wish we had more time,” Annali says.

The memorial service in Steelpoort is scheduled for 11.30 am on Friday 23 August at the AFM Church, the Thabazimbi memorial service for 11.30 am on Friday 30 August in the New Way Christian Church.
