Johannesburg - Emmanuel Sithole's killers will have to wait until next year to hear how long they would spend behind bars for their crime.

The two young men, Mthinta Bhengu and Sifundi Mzimela, both in their early 20s, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday where their case was postponed to January 29.

When proceedings resume next year, the court is expected to receive reports from their social workers.

Mzimela and Bhengu were caught on camera, attacking the Mozambican national on the streets of Alexandra in April after they had stolen cigarettes from his vendor table.

The pictures were taken by a Sunday Times photographer who had been in the area following a wave of xenophobic attacks.

Sithole, who is a foreigner, was killed as he demanded payment from the youths.

Initially, four people were arrested and charged for Sithole's murder.

One of them, 20-year-old, Sizwe Mngomezulu‚ was acquitted after the court ruled that he was a bystander and did not take part in the fatal stabbing.

Another, a minor who may not be named, was tried in camera. He was found guilty of robbery and assault.
