Pretoria  There was still no clarity on how six men escaped from the Cullinan police station in Pretoria, police said on Saturday morning.

"Police are unclear on how they broke but the matter is being investigated and possible re-arrests might be made as they are all South African citizens and local residents," said Constable Connie Moganedi.

The group busted out of the holding cell on Friday.

Two officers had been conducting a foot patrol around the station and when they returned, they found the suspects had escaped.

"They both went inside the cells for further inspection and discovered that six suspects, who were locked up inside cell number five are [sic] gone," said Moganedi.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 45-years-old, had been charged with arson, malicious damage to property, housebreaking, theft and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A search was underway for the group.
