Durban – A soldier was killed when a truck transporting a tank overturned on the Oliviershoek Pass, near Bergville, in KwaZulu-Natal, the SANDF said on Tuesday.

The soldier, who is yet to be named, was driving the truck and travelling in a convoy from Bloemfontein to Durban on Monday, for the SA Armed Forces Day on February 21, spokesperson Brigadier General Mafi Mgobhozi said.

The soldier lost control of the truck, which was carrying a Mark 2 Olifant battle tank. Two soldiers in the truck sustained minor injuries.

Army engineers and recovery vehicles were en route to the scene on Tuesday.

Military police and the SAPS were investigating the cause of the accident. The tank would be taken back to Bloemfontein.
