Johannesburg – An ANC consultative conference before its 2017 elective conference will help the ANC rebuild and renew itself, party veterans said on Thursday.

"Something has gone terribly wrong. We must sit down and talk about it, to say what is this thing," said one of the members of the movement, writer Wally Serote.

He and a group of party stalwarts presented a document entitled “For the Sake of our Future” at a media briefing in Johannesburg.

A total of 106 ANC members had signed the document. They included Ben Turok, Zola Skweyiya, Sipho Pityana, Essop Pahad, Mary Metcalfe, Pallo Jordan, and Denis Goldberg.

They expressed their concern over recent developments in the country, including the court battle over the release of former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s “State of Capture” report. It was made public on Wednesday.

Reverend Frank Chikane said he was struggling to make sense of what was happening in South Africa.

“I'm pained by recent developments in the country. I am pained by what's happening in the ANC,” he said.

Although Rivonia trialists Ahmed Kathrada and Andrew Mlangeni were in the room, they opted not to speak or be interviewed after the briefing.

The group of ANC elders said they were doing what they believed was best for the party. They said they had been trying, without success, to get a meeting with President Jacob Zuma.
