Russia’s 2018 Fifa Soccer World Cup organisers have labelled similarities between their Mordovia Arena and SA’s FNB Stadium as “an accidental coincidence” after the structure was officially unveiled.

Construction on the 44 000-seater stadium was completed in April – ahead of the soccer showpiece in June – but for most football supporters the similarities between Mordovia and SA’s crown jewel of the 2010 World Cup are too obvious.

Designers of Mordovia say the exterior design and colour pattern is inspired by the Russian city’s folk art, while the design of FNB Stadium was inspired by a calabash.

While the Russian 2018 World Cup directorate told Business Insider SA the similarities between the two stadiums was “coincidental”, Bob van Bebber, a director at architecture firm Boogertman + Partners and who designed FNB Stadium, told the same publication “copying is the highest act of flattery”.

However, South African twitter users weren’t as kind when assessing side-by-side visuals of the two structures.
