Johannesburg - The body of a 14-year-old girl swept away by floods in Braamfischerville, Soweto, has been found.

Her name was Dikeledi Matsheletja, mayoral committee member for health and social development Mpho Phalatse said in statement on Friday.

On Thursday, she was on her way home from school in Dobsonville when she was caught by flood waters on Elias Motsoaledi Road.

"She and her friends tried to cross a bridge which had a storm drain, but the currents were too strong and then she got swept away in the stream," Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe said.

In November 2016, three-year old Everlate Chauke was swept away during flash floods in Alexandra.

Her body was found in the Jukskei River in Buccleuch, north of Johannesburg.

Everlate and her parents, Shadrick and Cynthia, were in their makeshift home in Alexandra, next to the Jukskei River, when it started raining heavily. When water began filling their dwelling, they climbed a tree.

The branch that Everlate and her father were holding on to broke and the girl fell into the water. Shadrick jumped in after her, but was forced to swim back to safety without her.
