Johannesburg - A principal was left for dead after a former teacher allegedly stabbed her several times at a school in Soweto on Monday morning, police said.

The man, who was fired last year, allegedly waited for the woman to arrive at the Paul Mosaka Primary School in Pimville, and threw stones at her car, Captain Kay Makhubele said.

“As she opened her car door, he pulled her out of her car and stabbed her several times. Some of the bystanders started shouting and screaming.”

Local residents tried, but failed, to apprehend him. Police caught him later and took him to the Kliptown police station.

The woman was in a critical condition in hospital.

The motive behind the attack was still unclear. However, the man was fired last year because he had forged qualifications.

He would appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
