Pretoria - The man dubbed the "Springs Monster" pleaded guilty to one of the 22 charges against him, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Monday.

The trial against the 36-year-old man and his estranged wife began on Monday morning.

He pleaded guilty to interfering with a police officer while he was on duty during an investigation.

The couple faces 22 charges, including rape, abuse, possession and dealing in drugs.

The 36-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against her.

They were arrested in 2014 and are accused of neglecting their five children and keeping them hostage for years.

Their identities have been withheld to protect the children.
