Firefighters in Cape St. Francis, Eastern Cape, spent Sunday night and Monday morning battling flames up to 60m high. Watch.WATCH

Port Elizabeth - A flare is believed to have been used to start the fire in St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, the NSRI said on Monday.

It appeared that the flare landed in a patch of bush near Sea Vista on Saturday, National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Paul Hurley said.

The NSRI was helping with the firefighting effort.

"The fire is currently limited to small areas. The situation is better than yesterday," Hurley said.

Scores of firefighters had been deployed to the area and a helicopter was being used to water-bomb the blaze.

There were concerns that a change in wind direction, which was forecast for later on Monday morning, could fan the flames in another direction, said Hurley.

Some evacuations were ordered over the weekend, following minor damage to a few houses in the area.

No injuries or fatalities had been reported.
