Cape Town – Ministers who refused to redirect advertising to The New Age newspaper would be dealt with, the Guptas allegedly told former GCIS CEO Themba Maseko.

Former public protector Thuli Madonsela interviewed Maseko during her state capture probe.

Her 355-page report was released on Wednesday, after President Jacob Zuma withdrew his court application to interdict its release.

In her report, Madonsela raises concerns over the Gupta family’s influence on the state.

Maseko said he was called to a meeting with Ajay Gupta in 2010 and told to channel government advertising to the Gupta-owned New Age.

Maseko was in charge of a media buying budget of just over R600 million a year, the report states.

Maseko informed Ajay Gupta that the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) performed market research and decided on the client's target market before selecting the right medium of advertising.

He told Gupta the advertising budget was with various departments. Gupta said this was not a problem as they would instruct departments to advertise in the paper.

“Mr Ajay Gupta apparently stated that ‘tell us where the funds are and inform the departments to provide the funds to you and if they refuse, we will deal with them. If you have a problem with any department, we will summon ministers here',” he said.
