Cape Town – Celeste Nurse knew “trouble was going to start” if she found her daughter and prepared years ago for the moment she had to share her with another family, she told Heart FM this week.

She prepared physically and emotionally because her daughter would not know anything about her, she told host Aden Thomas in an emotional conversation broadcast on Tuesday morning.

“… I said a lot of things are going to happen because either I am going to lose or I am going to win my daughter back. So it is difficult… Zephany is most definitely going to choose that family because she has known them for her lifetime.”

Celeste said she had to accept the family because “the deed has been done” and nobody could go back.

She said it was her turn now.

“I have waited for 18 years. So I want to ask the family as well to step back. I am not asking them to forget about Zephany but just to step back and give me the chance to learn to know about my daughter.”

'Help my daughter'

She added: “I am the mom. That is why God gave mothers. They can deal with everything that you give them. Give me the benefit of the doubt to deal with this because I know I can help my daughter. I know I can support her.”

The Western Cape High Court last week convicted a 51-year-old woman of kidnapping, fraud and contravening the Children’s Act. She was expected to be sentenced at the end of May.

Thomas asked whether she wished the timing had played out differently.

“Being through a divorce, a child being abducted, being through cancer Stage 3B, God prepared me so this was the right time. Not five years ago, not a few years. It all happened in God’s time,” she replied.

At the end of their conversation, Thomas asked what she wanted 10 years from now. Celeste said she just wanted herself and her children to be happy, to have a long life and to be cancer-free.

To Zephany, she quoted a Bible verse and managed to speak through sobs.

“I want you to live by that verse and I miss you and love you and am here for you. Whenever you need me, I am here. Mommy is always thinking about you.”
