Johannesburg – Sunday Independent editor Steve Motale has confirmed his resignation from the newspaper, following a "lucrative offer" he could not resist.

"It was a decision I made [to resign]. I got an offer I couldn't resist," Motale told News24.

"I've enjoyed my stay at Independent Media and I would have loved to stay longer. But it was a lucrative offer. People come and go all the time and it was time to go," he said.

Motale joined the Sunday Independent in May 2017 and faced a tough year at the helm of the flagship Sunday newspaper. In September 2017, he wrote an exclusive story on now President Cyril Ramaphosa and his alleged womanising and affairs.

Following the publication of the story, Motale claimed he received death threats before he went on "stress leave".

Under him, the paper also had to retract a story about Luthuli House being auctioned off to pay off debt.

Motale said he was grateful to Independent Media chairperson Dr Iqbal Surve for recruiting him.

"I enjoyed myself. I am still very grateful for the opportunity to have worked here, but it was time to go," he said.

Motale said he was not able to divulge any information about where he was going to, but said that he was excited about the opportunity.

In a statement, Independent Media confirmed Motale's resignation.

"The editor of the Sunday Independent, Steve Motale, recently announced his departure from Independent Media. Steve joined the company in May 2017," the statement said.

"While he enjoyed being part of South Africa's dynamic and vibrant media industry, he has decided to pursue an entrepreneurial venture."

The statement said Surve thanked Motale for his "contribution to the company and wished him success with his future endeavours".
