Durban - Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Westville father who was shot dead in front of his 6-year-old twin children, in what appears to have been a botched hijacking at the weekend.

A group of armed men confronted security company owner Paresh Bodalia, 46, while he was opening his gate after arriving home around 20:00 on Saturday, two independent sources with knowledge of the investigation, and who requested anonymity, told News24.

He and the men exchanged fire, and Bodalia was shot in the head.

The men fled. Police found an additional pool of blood at the scene, indicating one of his attackers had been wounded.

Four men were arrested in connection with his slaying on Monday night.

According to the sources, a vehicle tracking officer had been searching for a stolen Uber taxi.

The tracker found the vehicle on a secluded dirt road on the outskirts of KwaDabeka and was waiting for police to arrive when three men arrived in another car.

The tracker, knowing that the three had no other reason to be in the area other than to see if the stolen car had been recovered, arrested them. One had the stolen Uber taxi’s keys in his pocket.

The tracker found a large blood stain and pools of blood in the car that the men had arrived in.

A fourth man, who sustained a gunshot wound, was found at King Edward VIII Hospital, and arrested.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the hospitalised man remained under police guard. He would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge soon.
