Johannesburg – On his 61st birthday the ANC announced that its chief whip in Parliament, Stone Sizani, was being redeployed.

Where is Sizani going?

According to City Press, Sizani told reporters outside the National Assembly on Wednesday that he was taking up the post of ambassador to Germany.

The post has become vacant following Dr Makhenkesi Stofile's retirement.

Sizani said ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe had told him last week Thursday that he was being redeployed.

But a statement from the ANC announcing his redeployment did not say where he was going.

The only thing the party said was that because of the urgency with which he was needed in the new role, Sizani had resigned from Parliament with immediate effect, and that the party would announce his replacement in due course.

Chief whip since 2013

Sizani has been the ANC's chief whip since 2013, replacing Mathole Motshekga.

In the '80s, Sizani was involved in UDF structures and spent time on Robben Island. After his release from prison, he was chairperson of the ANC's Zwide second branch.

From 2006 to 2009 Sizani was the ANC's Eastern Cape provincial secretary and has been an ANC national executive committee member since 2009.

Sizani has an MA in development studies from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Sizani's wife Portia is facing charges of money laundering in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court. In February this year, the court reportedly found her not guilty on five of the 15 counts.

She is expected back in court in June.

According to City Press, Portia Sizani was alleged to have defrauded the department of education of more than R1.2m between 2009 and 2010 when she worked as the Port Elizabeth district education co-ordinator of the early childhood development unit.
