Pietermaritzburg - With heart-wrenching statistics indicating the extent of poverty in KZN, Stop Hunger Now SA is aiming to alleviate the severity of hunger in the province.

Stop Hunger Now SA, an international organisation that co-ordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid worldwide, has planned to distribute 10 million meals in six countries in the space of eight days. The organisation has opened a branch in Pietermaritzburg and will also establish a meal packaging centre in the city.

But now they need your help. They are staging a charity event and aim to attract hundreds of people to participate in packing food parcels for the poor.

Pietermaritzburg Community Chest executive director Michael Deegan said the Community Chest was proud to be working with Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa to eradicate hunger in the province.

Deegan said the fact that 492 000 children up to the ages of six years old are hungry in KwaZulu-Natal and that the province is the worst hunger stricken province in South Africa, was appalling. The organisation is appealing to local schools, organisations and companies to offer a helping hand at the mass food packaging centre to be held at the YMCA between June 13 and 20.

“We are appealing to teams and individuals to take part. For all companies this can be a great team building exercise as well as a staff development opportunity for only R500 per person per team of 20.

“Individuals can come along and join others to make a team of production line of 20 people,” said Deegan.

“Contributing to such initiatives should not only be during Mandela day but it should be continuous,” he said.
